Why Are Watch Dealers and Collectors So Secretive?
Jun 29, 2021 Season 1 Episode 9
Roman Sharf

We know Rolex is a robust "tool watch" but what about other watch brands like Audemars Piguet, Panerai, Omega and others?

One viewer is wondering how fragile watches from AP are, and if there's any merit to the rumor. Today we also address the secrecy in the watch industry, as I discuss why watch dealers and watch collectors are so secretive. The reality is not as ominous as you may think.

tay tuned to hear my answers to the following questions:

⚙️ What do you think about the Rolex Yacht-Master II (YM 42)?

⚙️ Why are dealers and collectors usually secretive around disclosing their particular numbered piece in limited edition watches? (not the serial number obviously but just the "X/Y")

⚙️ With the Royal Oak, Nautilus and other "Genta-Esque" watches being so hugely popular in the market, why is the only other brand with a legit "integrated Genta design," IWC and their Ingenieur line, not utilizing that legacy for all it's worth to fuel more hype and attention to their brand? Their most recent Ingenieur design is not bad, it just seems like a hugely missed opportunity. What's your take on the Ingenieur line in general? Both in design and current market positioning?

⚙️ Can I try a watch on at your location before I buy it?

⚙️ I have the Rolex Sea-Dweller 4000 (Ref # 116600) and would like to get your opinion. How many of them do you think are out there? What are your views on the future collectability of this model and where do you see it potentially trading at in the long term?

⚙️ Being that box and papers have been a big issue over the last decade, what is the newest watch you would hesitate buying because it didn't have box and papers? I recently saw a 2020 six-figure AP with no papers. How can this be possible? Did his dog eat them?

⚙️ What other brands are just as robust and well-made as Rolex and still attainable? (Excluding RM) I have heard that AP's are somewhat fragile. Is this true?
